Online Protection vs. Freedom of Speech
.
Wired News has been (in their own words) on a “tirade” about the Megan Meier Cyberbullying Prevention Act, proposed by Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA). The bill would make it a crime“, punishable by fine or up to two years imprisonment, “for those whose electronic speech is meant to “coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to a person.””
.
Critics (including Wired News) say that the language is vague and over-broad; criminalizing “logging onto the internet.” Backers, including Sanchez and 15 congressional co-sponsors, are responding to the tragic suicide of 13 year old Megan Meier following a well-publicized case of online harassment.
.
What do you think? Where do we draw the line between First Amendment Freedoms and civil safeties? Is it appropriate to draw a line at all?
